Klöckner Pentaplast (kp), a global leader in recycled content products and high-barrier protective packaging, announced plans to expand its post-consumer recycled content (PCR) PET capacity in North America with an investment important to further develop its sustainable innovation offering in the consumer healthcare, pharmaceutical and food packaging markets.
kp is currently the industry leader with over 20% of its volumes made from PCR material. The expansion will add an extrusion line and two thermoformers providing a total of 15,000 metric tons of new rPET/PET capacity.
Scott Tracey, President and CEO of Klöckner Pentaplast, said: “This investment supports our growth strategy and is the result of our strong commitment to sustainable innovation. The expansion responds to our customers’ continued demand for sustainable options in food packaging, pharmaceuticals, consumer products and label films. Together with our customers, we will continue to develop solutions that reduce the need for virgin raw materials, which is essential for our industry’s sustainability goals in the future.
The extrusion line will support the production of important sustainable product lines, such as kpNext™ and Smartcycle recyclable pharmaceutical blister films® recyclable labels and consumer packaging films. Thermoformers will produce the award-winning kp Elite® mono-material protein trays, which are made from up to 100% recycled PET and are easily recycled creating a circular economy.
The location for the multi-million dollar expansion is currently being determined and will be located adjacent to one of its six North American plants that is best located to serve its customer base. It should be fully operational in the first quarter of 2024.
